У 1907 році головний хранитель Львівської міської галереї М. Гарасимович подарував зі своєї книгозбірні кілька видань й у такий спосіб посприяв заснуванню наукової бібліотеки Галереї. Однією з перших фонд поповнила книга К. Хлєндовського «Sztuka współczesna i jej kierunkі», видана у Львові 1873 року, на титульному аркуші якої зберігся автограф «Harasimowicz».
В інвентарній книзі бібліотеки, розпочатій 1947 року, під першим номером вказані «Життєписи найславетніших живописців, скульпторів та архітекторів» Дж. Вазарі зі збірки історика і колекціонера В. Лозинського, що вийшли друком у Флоренції 1878 року.
Книжковий фонд наукової бібліотеки Галереї поповнювався за рахунок дублетних примірників бібліотек Міського архіву, Історичного музею міста Львова та Художньо-промислового музею. Часто приватні колекціонери разом із колекціями художніх творів передавали до Галереї книги з власних книгозбірень. У багатьох виданнях зустрічаються екслібриси, штампи,
автографи власників і дарчі написи митців, науковців, письменників, які жили та працювали у Львові.
На початку 1930-х років мистецтвознавець і колекціонер С. Заревич подарував Галереї близько 2000 різних путівників і каталогів. На сьогодні їхня збірка є однією з найцінніших, оскільки містить рідкісні екземпляри видань кінця ХІХ ‒ початку ХХ ст.
У 1990-х роках фонд бібліотеки поповнила література, передана мистецтвознавцями Г. Островським та О. Ріпко. Після загибелі багатолітнього директора Галереї Б. Возницького його донька Л. Разінкова передала з приватної бібліотеки батька понад 1300 видань.
Збірка бібліотеки містить чимало довідкових видань – енциклопедій, словників, довідників і понад 5000 періодичних видань різних років.
Упродовж десятиліть наукова бібліотека Галереї поповнюється завдяки співпраці з музеями Польщі, Литви, Латвії, Естонії, Італії та інших країн.
Книгозбірня формувалась як мистецька, тому її основу становлять мистецтвознавчі дослідження, альбоми, монографії про художників, історична, музеєзнавча література. Для дослідників мистецтва доступна література польською, німецькою, англійською, французькою, італійською мовами. Наукова бібліотека є структурним підрозділом Галереї, що включає книгозбірні відділів «Музей-заповідник «Олеський замок», «Музей-заповідник «Золочівський замок» та «Музей староукраїнської книги».
Бібліотека обслуговує наукових співробітників Галереї, науковців з інших інституцій, студентів вищих навчальних закладів ІІІ ‒ IV рівнів акредитації з України та з-за кордону. Станом на 2024 рік книжковий фонд наукової бібліотеки налічує понад 36000 видань, зокрема більше 5000 періодичних видань та 4000 каталогів художніх виставок і путівників. До послуг користувачів тематичний та алфавітний каталоги.
Наукова бібліотека Галереї працює щодня, окрім суботи і неділі.

In 1907, the curator of the Lviv Art Gallery, M. Harasimowicz, donated several publications from his own library, thereby contributing to the establishment of the Gallery’s scientific library. One of the first additions to the collection was the book “Sztuka współczesna i jej kierunki” by K. Chłędowski, published in Lviv in 1873, with an autograph of “Harasimowicz” preserved on the title page.
In the library’s inventory book, which was started in 1947, the first entry is “Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects” by G. Vasari, from the collection of historian and collector W. Łoziński, published in Florence in 1878.
The scientific library’s collection was expanded with duplicate copies from the libraries of the City Archive, the Historical Museum of Lviv, and the Museum of Ethnography and Crafts. Often, private collectors would donate books from their personal libraries to the Gallery along with their art collections. Many of these publications bear ex-libris marks, stamps, autographs of the owners, and dedicatory inscriptions from artists, scholars, and writers who lived and worked in Lviv.
In the early 1930s, art historian and collector S. Zarewicz donated about 2,000 guidebooks and catalogues to the Gallery. Today, this collection is one of the most valuable, as it contains rare publications from the late 19th to early 20th century. In the 1990s, the library collection was further enriched with literature donated by art historians H. Ostrovskyi and O. Ripko. After the tragic death of the longtime director of the Gallery, B. Voznytskyi, his daughter L. Razinkova donated over 1,300 publications from his private library.
The library’s collection includes many reference books – encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, and over 5,000 periodicals from various years.
For decades, the Gallery’s scientific library has been expanding through collaboration with museums in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Italy, and other countries.
The library was established as an art-focused collection, and its core consists of art research studies, albums, monographs about artists, historical literature, and museum studies literature. Researchers have access to literature in Polish, German, English, French, and Italian.
The scientific library is a structural department of the Gallery, including the libraries of the museum units Museum-Reserve Olesko Castle, Museum-Reserve Zolochiv Castle, and the Ancient Ukrainian Book Museum.
The library provides services to the Gallery’s researchers, scholars from other institutions, and students from higher educational institutions of the III ‒ IV accreditation levels from Ukraine and abroad.
As of 2024, the scientific library’s collection includes over 36,000 publications, including more than 5,000 periodicals and 4,000 art exhibition catalogues and guidebooks. The library offers both thematic and alphabetical catalogues for its users.
The scientific library is open daily, except Saturday and Sunday.
