Piatnychany Tower

The Piatnychany Tower is a restored monument of defensive architecture of the 15th century. Since May 18, 1995, the eponymous museum-reserve has been operating in the watchtower. The historic site with defensive fortifications comprises a stone tower, a bridge (formerly a drawbridge), earthworks (a bank and a ditch), a palisade (a defensive wall made of wooden stakes), and an imitation of a well in place of an ancient cone-shaped pit (possibly a storage tank) in the courtyard. The tower is located on a hillside on the western outskirts of Piatnychany village and is a typical one-sided defensive fortification.

The Piatnychany Tower is a four-tiered, almost square in its foundation (7,83х7,4 m) building in the Gothic style. The height of the walls is about 12 m. The roof is pyramidal. The tower is built of split limestone blocks bound together by lime-based mortar. Each tier of the fortified building had its own purpose, in particular the lowest tier was a basement for the bridge, the first tier served as the entrance to the territory, the second tier had a courtyard entrance with an external staircase, and the third tier provided an exit to a wooden gallery. The corners of the tower as well as lancet arches of the gates and doors in the Gothic style on the second tier of the northern facade are lined with hewn stone blocks. Along the external perimeter of the fortification, one can observe the ground holes that have remained in place of wooden posts. These are apparently traces of a wooden defensive gallery.

On the south side, the tower was protected by a dry deep ditch with a drawbridge over it. Such a moveable bridge called a "zheravets" (a "crane"), which was raised on the principle of counterweight, has traditionally been used in defense architecture since the days of Kyivan Rus. Nowadays almost none of the bridges of this type are preserved.

The Acts of the Lviv City Court testify to the existence of the Piatnychany Defensive Fortification since 1454.  Records in the Acts of 1499 and 1502 mention the Vnuchky family as the owners of Piatnychany. They rebuilt the fortification after the devastating raid of Turkish-Tatar and Moldavian troops on the Lviv territory. In the late 15th and early 16th centuries, Piatnychany Defensive Fortification was put in pledge to Rafal Sieniawski, Mykola Vnuchek’s maternal uncle. This fact may add support to the historical legends claiming the Piatnychany fortifications to be the Sieniawski Castle, and also confirm the two-stage construction of the building, the second period of which dates back to the beginning of the 16th century.

In the following centuries, with the development of firearms, the fortified settlement lost its defensive purpose. Starting from the end of the 16th century, it experienced the state of neglect. In the late 18th century, the Piatnychany Tower had no owners and was referred to as the "old-fashioned stone tower". It is known that by the 20th century, the Basilian Monastery operated in that territory.

In the 1970s, archaeological studies of the Piatnychany Tower started over again (there was a revival of interest in the monument in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries). From 1983 till 1986, on the basis of the Ukrzahidproektrestavratsiia restoration project, active work on rehabilitating the monument was accomplished. At the same time, in the process of reconstruction and museification of the Piatnychany complex, thorough scientific research was carried out.

The uniqueness of the Piatnychany Tower Museum-Reserve is that it is a rare example of the transient stage from the wooden to stone castle construction, whilst the gate tower is probably the earliest model of a stone donjon.

Muzeum-rezerwat „Wieża Piatnyczańska”

Muzeum otwarto w zrekonstruowanym zabytku architektury z połowy XV wieku, dworze obronnym rodziny Wnuczków, o którym pierwsza pisemna wzmianka pochodzi z 1454 roku.
